You can find this type of plastic in some rotisserie chicken boxes, deli containers, and certain take-out boxes. Look for containers with a #6 recycle code, as this is the only type of plastic that will shrink correctly. However, keep in mind that some plastics may turn milky or white when heated, so choose containers that will provide the desired final look. Clear plastic containers can be coloured on using permanent markers or coloured pencils, while frosted plastic offers a different aesthetic.

Once it has completely flattened out, it’s then ready! As it heats up, the plastic will roll up slightly and then flatten out. Line a cookie sheet with some oven-proof parchment paper or foil. Don’t forget to let your ink dry before adding any coloured pencil embellishments, and remember that colours will become more saturated and vibrant after baking, so less is more in this case. When I checked–they looked all curled up–but in different directions. I dug into my stash of saved #6 plastic and grabbed several squares that I could cut into pieces about the same sizes as the ones I had tried before.
